Fetishism is a perversion in which sexual arousal and orgasm are impossible without the presence of a fetish ; usually a nongenital part of the human body, an inamimate object of somthing with special quality, such as a particular odor or touch.Freud(1927) discovered that the fetish represents an unconscious fantasy that defends against awareness of the women´s lack of a penis. The fetish is the woman´s phallus. This unconscious fantasy eliminates the fear of castration and allows the individual to engage in intercourse and achive sexual gratification. After Freud, the authors´ observation indicate that the fetish may result from defetive ego development particularly in separation-individuation period. The fetish may unconsciusly symbolize not only the fantasied female phallus but also the breast, buttocks, and even feces. The relations of the transitional object to fetishism can be considered genetically in terms of different stages of a similar process(Dickes 1%3, Greenacre 1970). Dr. Kim´s psychoanalytic case of the shoe fetishism illustrates various unconscious meaning of fetish ; such as monther´s phallus, energizer, respiratory incorporation of maleness, envy and devaluation of strong phalluses, transitional object. The patient had a conflict resulted from defective ego development in separation-individuation period.
